What is Asthma? What makes it so shocking?

Breathing becomes difficult as the linings of the airways swell. This impedes the free flow of air. The linings are swollen and inflamed because something has triggered an allergic response. When experiencing an attack these airways begin to convulse leading to coughing, wheezing and a sensation of tightness in the patient's chest. This causes breathlessness. It is frightening and intense. Dizziness and fear are created by the lack of oxygen to the brain. It is crucial not to panic as that would only aggravate the situation.
